What it is. Jeremy Harmer's short introduction to English language teaching methodology, published by Pearson Longman. It is the compact companion to his much longer The Practice of English Language Teaching - same author, much the same ground, in far fewer pages.
How it is built. The chapters work outward from the people in the room. Who learners are and what a teacher does come first, then how to describe language, then the practical business of teaching it - grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation - then the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and finally coursebooks, lesson planning and testing. What is bundled with the book differs from one edition to another, so read the listing carefully if that is part of why you are buying a particular printing.
Who it suits. Anyone at the start of a TEFL or TESOL course who wants the whole shape of the job in one sitting. It is deliberately readable rather than academic, which makes it a good first piece of outside reading once your coursework has started and you want a second voice on the same material.
What it does not do. It is an overview, so no single area gets deep treatment - pronunciation, for instance, gets a short run here and whole books elsewhere.
