Don’t forget - Preparation is key to succeeding in your Scheme teaching position interview.

To help you showcase your skills and suitability for this position, Global English TESOL has put together a few of our top tips to help you excel in the interview process…

Research the Hong Kong NET Scheme

Before diving into interview preparation, it's crucial to understand all the ins and outs of the Hong Kong NET Scheme:

Program Objectives: Familiarise yourself with the goals and objectives of the NET Scheme, which aims to enhance English language education in Hong Kong schools through native English-speaking teachers. Visit the EDB website for more information.

Role Expectations: Gain clarity on what is expected of NET teachers, including teaching responsibilities, collaboration with local teachers, and participation in extracurricular activities.

Educational System: Research Hong Kong's educational system, curriculum frameworks, and teaching methodologies to demonstrate your understanding during your interview.

Reflect on Your Teaching Philosophy and Experience

Prepare to discuss your teaching philosophy, methodologies, and relevant experiences:

Teaching Philosophy: Reflect on your beliefs about language education, student engagement, and cultural sensitivity. Be prepared to articulate how your philosophy aligns with the goals of the NET Scheme.

Relevant Experience: Mention your TEFL Qualification(s), highlight your teaching experience, particularly in ESL/EFL contexts, and share specific examples of how you have effectively engaged students, differentiated instruction, and promoted language acquisition.

Cultural Sensitivity: Emphasise your ability to adapt to diverse cultural settings and foster cross-cultural understanding in the classroom.

Practice Interview Questions

Anticipate common interview questions and practice your responses:

Why do you want to teach in Hong Kong under the NET Scheme?
Highlight your passion for teaching, interest in cultural exchange, and commitment to enhancing English language education.

How would you approach teaching English to non-native speakers?
Discuss your teaching methodologies, use of communicative language teaching techniques, and strategies for scaffolding language learning.

Can you provide an example of a challenging teaching situation you've encountered and how you addressed it?
Share a specific experience, emphasising your problem-solving skills, flexibility, and ability to maintain a positive learning environment.

Showcase Your Language Proficiency

Demonstrate your English language proficiency during the interview:

Clear Communication: Speak confidently and articulately, demonstrating your command of the English language.

Language Skills: If applicable, showcase any additional language skills, such as basic proficiency in Cantonese, which may be advantageous in communicating with students and colleagues.

Research the School and Community

Gain insights into the school and community where you may be placed:

School Culture: Research the school's mission, values, and student demographics to tailor your responses to fit the school's ethos.

Community Engagement: Explore opportunities for community engagement and extracurricular involvement, showcasing your willingness to contribute beyond the classroom.

Global English TESOL wishes you the best of luck on your teaching journey in Hong Kong.
