Europe: Spain NALCAP (Auxiliares) - Spain

Spain's official government language-assistant scheme (Auxiliares de Conversacion) for North Americans.

NALCAP - the North American Language and Culture Assistants Program - is the US/Canada strand of Spain's long-running government Auxiliares de Conversación scheme, administered by the Spanish Ministry of Education. Assistants support Spanish teachers in state schools across most autonomous communities, working roughly 12–16 hours a week to boost students' spoken English, in exchange for a monthly stipend, basic Spanish health cover and a student-visa route to living in Spain for an academic year.

Requirements: US or Canadian citizenship, a conferred degree or second-year-plus enrolment, and native or near-native English. No teaching licence is needed, which makes it well suited to recent graduates and current students.

Salary & benefits: a monthly stipend of roughly €800–€1,000 depending on region, plus basic health cover through the Spanish system.

Intake: placements run from 1 November to late May, with applications submitted through the Ministry's PROFEX portal in June. Note the programme is being restructured for 2026/27 and several regions have temporarily paused participation, so check which communities are recruiting.
