Volunteer teaching English in community and government schools in Sri Lanka – a rewarding way to gain first classroom experience, no degree required.
Location: Community and government schools across Sri Lanka
Position: Volunteer English teacher / classroom assistant
Vacancies: Ongoing – flexible start dates through the year
Contract: Flexible placements, commonly from a few weeks to several months
Hours / duties: Support or lead English lessons for children learning English from the early primary years, and help with conversation practice and activities.
Pay: This is a voluntary role; placements are usually arranged through a volunteer programme with a fee that covers your accommodation and in-country support.
Additional benefits: Accommodation is normally provided, along with a genuine cultural immersion and valuable teaching experience.
Qualifications and requirements
Minimum TESOL certificate: Not required, though a Global English TESOL qualification will help you get far more from the placement.
Nationality: Fluent English speaker.
Other requirements: No degree required; enthusiasm, patience and a genuine wish to help young learners are what matter most.
With state-school funding limited, most grassroots teaching in Sri Lanka is delivered by volunteers – an ideal first step for new teachers wanting classroom experience and travel.
