Location: Antigua, Quetzaltenango (known as Xela) and Guatemala City. Employers include the Instituto Guatemalteco-Americano, Maximo Nivel and other independent institutes.
Position: English teacher at a language institute. Smaller schools regularly hire keen teachers without a degree, making this a strong first TEFL role.
Contract: Six to twelve months. Hiring peaks in January, with a further round of turnover in June and July.
Hours and duties: Around 20 to 25 teaching hours per week with adults, planning lively lessons and keeping simple records.
Pay and benefits: Language-school pay is around US$400 to US$600 per month, rising to US$600 to US$1,000 at bilingual schools. The cost of living is among the lowest in the region, with US$400 to US$900 covering a comfortable month in Xela or Antigua, and many teachers top up with online hours.
Requirements: A 120-hour TEFL or TESOL certificate and enthusiasm. A bachelor's degree is standard at bilingual schools but not at smaller institutes.
Qualifications: A Global English TESOL qualification and a minimum of a high-school diploma.
