Teaching in Vietnam as an intern
Vietnam’s English-teaching market has boomed for a decade and still can’t hire fast enough - public schools, private language centres and kindergartens all compete for qualified native-level speakers. For interns that means real choice: energetic language-centre evenings-and-weekends timetables in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, or daytime public-school placements in smaller cities.
The money is the standout. $1,400–$1,600 a month is standard for a first job, rents are low, and street food costs pennies - Vietnam is one of the few starter destinations where teachers actually save. Language centres hire year-round, so unlike Thailand you’re not locked to two semester dates.
What to expect
- A placement in a vetted school or language centre - Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or a smaller city if you prefer a quieter posting
- An arrival orientation covering Vietnamese classroom culture, teaching practice and the admin of settling in
- Around 20–25 teaching hours a week; language-centre schedules run evenings and weekends, public schools run weekdays
- Work-permit and business-visa paperwork guided by the in-country team - Vietnam’s document legalisation is fiddly and worth having help with
- In-country support throughout your placement, plus a cohort of fellow interns arriving with you
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in any subject (required for a Vietnamese work permit)
- A 120-hour TEFL/TESOL certificate
- Native-level English; UK, Irish, US, Canadian, Australian, NZ or South African passports have the smoothest paperwork
- A clean criminal record check (legalised for Vietnam - the partner guides this)
- No teaching experience needed
