Teaching in Thailand as an intern

Thailand hires thousands of new English teachers every year, and its internship route is the most established in the world: you arrive with an intake group before the semester starts, get an orientation covering Thai classroom culture and survival Thai, then teach a full term in a government or private school - usually in a provincial town where you’re a valued guest rather than one farang among thousands.

The salary (typically 30,000–35,000 baht a month on internship programmes) is a comfortable local wage: enough to rent your own place, eat out every day and travel at weekends, though not to save seriously. The real value is the year’s experience - Thailand on a CV opens doors to better-paid jobs in Vietnam, Korea, Japan and beyond.

What to expect

A placement matched before you fly, with the school, town and accommodation options confirmed by the in-country team

FAQs

How much can I earn teaching in Thailand?

Internship placements typically pay 30,000–35,000 THB a month (roughly £680–£800). Living costs outside Bangkok are low, so this funds a genuinely good life - but treat it as a paid adventure and a career launchpad, not a savings plan.

Where in Thailand would I be placed?

Internship schools are spread across the North, Northeast (Isaan) and Central regions - mostly provincial towns and small cities rather than Bangkok or the islands. That’s where the demand is, and where the experience is most authentic (and cheapest).

When do placements start?

The Thai school year runs in two semesters, starting around May and November, with orientations shortly before each. Those are the two realistic entry points each year - worth knowing when you plan your TEFL course.

Can I go without a degree?

Not to Thailand - the work permit legally requires a bachelor’s degree. If you don’t have one, register your interest and say so: destinations like Cambodia don’t require a degree, and demand directly shapes what we launch next.
