Teaching English to Beginners

For many teachers being asked to teach a group of beginners is a scary thought. How do I speak to them? What if they can’t understand me? What can I really hope to teach them if they have no English?

In this course we’re going to look at some of the issues involved in a beginner class and develop strategies to deal with those problems. Our aim is that you’ll leave the TESOL Live Spotlight course with more confidence in your ability to teach English to beginners.

Interactive price: £35.00

Interactive: PC/Mac/tablet compatible. Work on our interactive platform. Good internet access required.

Why this course?

This course is for anyone who wants to find out more about how we can teach English to beginners and improve their ability, whether teaching beginners face to face or online.

We try to distinguish between a complete beginner and false beginner, as well as cover some of the common problems that beginners have. Then we will move on to look at the importance of keeping thing simple (and how we do this practically), along with specific teaching techniques to help them learn.  Finally, in your Zoom session you’ll get to introduce a grammar structure or set of new language for beginners to your tutor.

All this aims to help you develop an understanding of the problems that beginners often have when trying to take their first steps in the language. It’s a great short course if you are already teaching and want a refresher programme, or if you are simply looking to further develop your professional TESOL teaching skills.

We are here for advice and feedback throughout your short course.

There is no final exam and you are graded by continuous assessment through the pre-session modules and attendance on the Zoom session. You’ll receive a certificate upon successful completion.

How this interactive Zoom course works

This course is ideal if you’ve got a good broadband connection so can work entirely online via a tablet/PC/Mac. You’ll complete interactive exercises, watch videos and answer questions, before your live Zoom one-to-one session with your personal TESOL trainers, who will help bring teaching beginners to life for you.

Student Comments

The Zoom session was really helpful - It was great that it was so tailored to my questions but also practical - letting me experience being a learner, give teaching a go and get questions answered related to my specific context. The actual online course part was on the easy side for me, but still helpful to consider and worth doing.
L Upton, UK

Excellent course. Was really interactive and teaches you the vital information on how to teach beginners. It also gives you actually teaching experience with your tutor during the zoom session.
Gavin Stein, UK

Like anything, being put on the spot is a bit daunting. However that being said, it is a great way to get into the practice mode of delivering to actual students. It was great to have practice and feedback straight away. It was very user friendly.
Robert Rae, NZ

The course was great. I'd completed the 120h TEFL but (that) looked more at meeting the needs of intermediate learners. I valued the practical exercise of sharing a mini lesson and the tutor feedback on my presentation. This short course has shown me areas I need to change when I teach beginners. It was excellent value for money. I realised after having to use a paper backup resource on the warmers and starters course how awkward it is to work with paper on a zoom call.
