Why this course?

This course is for English teachers who want to deliver successful lessons on Zoom. We will help you practice and build up your Zoom confidence and show you some simple lesson ideas that work well on this platform.

Before the live one-hour Zoom session, you’ll engage in some short, preparatory modules on our interactive platform.  We’ll take you through the Zoom essentials step-by-step. You’ll watch videos, try some practice tasks and complete some simple assignments so you’ll be ready for the live practice with your peers.

This course is ideal if you are already teaching and want to feel more comfortable with Zoom, or if you are quite new to Zoom and want to further develop your skills in a professional TESOL setting.

We are here for advice and feedback throughout your short course.

There is no final exam and you are graded by continuous assessment through the pre-session modules and attendance on the Zoom session. You’ll receive a certificate upon successful completion.

By the end of this you will be able to:

  • Set up a meeting (demonstrated in the pre-session module)
  • Use the chat facility in a lesson
  • Share your screen, pictures and documents
  • Make another person the host (and have students share their screens)
  • Set up break out rooms, name those rooms and assign students to specific rooms
  • Use Zoom annotation tools and allow your students to annotate a document or whiteboard
  • Understand the kind of tasks that work well in a Zoom format
  • Lead your peers in an English task in Zoom

How this interactive Zoom course works

This course is ideal if you’ve got a good broadband connection so can work entirely online via a tablet/PC/Mac.  (Note that iPads don’t utilise all Zoom functionality, such as the save option when annotating.) You’ll complete interactive exercises, watch videos via YouTube before your live Zoom session with up to 6 other trainees, led by an expert trainer to help bring the subject to life.

This short course can easily be completed in a day, or over a few hours each evening. However, you have up to 60 days to complete it.

What do I need to take part?

* A PC/laptop/iPad/tablet/phone with a webcam and microphone, and the ability to screen share.
* Headphones are preferred but not essential.
* You will need some basic Zoom competency, such as the ability to join the session, enable your camera/sound etc. Our short pre-sessional course is essential before the live Zoom class and will help you here, but it is your responsibility to be ready technically for the live session.

A prior TEFL/TESOL certificate is not needed for this course.

What about any tech problems on the day?

We know it happens occasionally. Hopefully, you will have worked through any major Zoom issues beforehand. On the day, if you have trouble getting online, get in touch. We will try to help, but we cannot guarantee support and you should consider that if you cannot connect to a session that is running successfully, you will have lost your place. We can transfer you to a new session upon payment of a £10 Spotlight transfer fee.

Everything you need to complete your course and gain your certificate is included in the one fee above. However, check out these optional extras:

  • Additional time course extensions available if you need to go beyond 60 days
  • Global English printed and embossed certificate posted to you (£15 UK / £20 outside)
  • Resources from the course available as a FREE downloadable PDF from your student area

Student Comments

Meeting the tutors and other teachers during the Zoom session was really good - it was a nice small group of teachers who teach in a variety of settings, both in the classroom and online. Having the chance to present and experience warmer activities in a breakout room was really useful, as was discussing how they could be adapted to suit higher or lower-level learners and different age groups. The study Modules before the live Zoom session were very good and had some great ideas for the classroom or online lessons. The 1-hour Zoom session was just right, there was enough time to share ideas and have our questions answered at the end - a really enjoyable session. Thank you, William and Louisa, the Spotlight Live TESOL course was a great success!
Carol King, Germany

It was interactive and very informative. For only one hour I learnt quite a lot: practiced my warmer, learnt new activities and learnt about new online classroom approaches (flipped classroom). The most important thing - I was able to interact with other English teachers and learnt from them as well.
Natalya H, UK

It is a very helpful and practical course. I had tried a few things on Zoom but it gave me more confidence and showed me what I didn't know. Many thanks indeed.
Lynne Upton, UK

This is a very practical and enjoyable course.  It focuses on the Zoom 'tool box' of features that are so valuable for ESOL teaching online and also builds confidence in using them. The supportive tutors, who responded very promptly and fully to all my questions throughout the course, and who made the final practical session so relaxed, create a feeling of confidence. A great course and good value!
Tricia Mortimer, UK

I got all my answers to my questions and learned some more things from the others. The atmosphere was relaxed and open and there was enough time with 3 students for everyone. I like the fact that there is a follow-up possible if we think of other questions further on. It was fun, clear and very practical to go through the theory and practice for Zoom. It has removed all fears of using it.
Anne-May, France

Very useful to connect with others and try things out on Zoom. I appreciated the patience and support when my zoom demonstration did not work straight away, and felt no undue pressure, and felt free to ask questions. Thank You!
Rose Edney, UK
