Teaching English on Zoom Basic for CT

Date: 19/04/2021 19:00 UK

If you are teaching English online but lack a little Zoom know-how and confidence, this short, live ‘how to’ course is ideal.

Leading up a live Zoom hour where you’ll enjoy leading and experiencing Zoom tasks with your peers, you’ll prepare and practice through some short, interactive modules. You’ll learn how to send meeting invites, share your screen, use the Whiteboard and annotate. This isn’t just about the technology – we’ll share some lesson ideas that work well on the platform, too. You’ll have full tutor support throughout and the live session itself is led by our online English teaching expert Louisa.

It's especially suitable for individuals or small groups of Christians engaged in outreach to second language speakers, either in an English speaking country (ESOL) or teaching overseas (TEFL).

Interactive price: £20.00

Interactive: PC/Mac/tablet compatible. Work on our interactive platform. Good internet access required.

Why this course?

You may be new to English teaching or new to Zoom, or perhaps you are experienced in both. Either way, this unique course provides a safe space to practice using Zoom for English teaching and will help you improve your confidence and knowledge of the platforms’ possibilities.

We assume only basic Zoom knowledge so you can be assured that we go stage-by-stage, walking through the essentials via video, explanations and practical tasks where you can put your knowledge into practice. This is designed to get you ready for the live Zoom hour where you will try out a Zoom task on your peers under the care of Global English tutor Louisa.

There is no final exam and you are graded by continuous assessment through the pre-session modules and attendance on the Zoom session. You’ll receive a certificate upon successful completion and some handy resources.

By the end of this you will be able to:

  • Set up a meeting (demonstrated in the pre-session module)
  • Use the chat facility in a lesson
  • Share your screen, pictures and documents
  • Make another person the host (and have students share their screens)
  • Set up break out rooms, name those rooms and assign students to specific rooms
  • Use Zoom annotation tools and allow your students to annotate a document or whiteboard
  • Understand the kind of tasks that work well in a Zoom format
  • Lead your peers in an English task in Zoom

How this interactive Zoom course works

You will need a good broadband connection so you can work online via a tablet/PC/Mac. (Note that iPads don’t utilise all Zoom functionality, such as the save option when annotating.) You’ll complete interactive exercises, watch videos via YouTube before your live Zoom session with up to 6 other trainees, led by an expert trainer to help bring the subject to life.

Meet your course tutor

This course is led by Louisa Walsh, Course Director at Global English TESOL. Louisa has many years' experience in the TESOL and teaching English online specifically. She is available for help and advice throughout and will lead the live Zoom session. Read more from Louisa at the tutor profile on this page or watch some of her videos here.

Eligibility

Open to native and non-native English speakers over 18 years old with a good level of spoken English. If you are a non-native English speaker, please see the course eligibility requirements on our FAQ page. Remember you can always ask us if you are not sure about your level of English.

As this is a course aimed at assisting Christians in English outreach, the Zoom course session will start with a introduction to who we all are and a short time of prayer.

Course duration

This short course can easily be completed in a day, or over a few hours each evening. However, you have up to 60 days to complete it.

What do I need to take part?

* A PC/laptop/iPad/tablet/phone with a webcam and microphone, and the ability to screen share.
* Headphones are preferred but not essential.
* You will need some basic Zoom competency, such as the ability to join the session, enable your camera/sound etc. Our short pre-sessional course is essential before the live Zoom class and will help you here, but it is your responsibility to be ready technically for the live session.

A prior TEFL/TESOL certificate is not needed for this course.

What about any tech problems on the day?

We know it happens occasionally. Hopefully, you will have worked through any major Zoom issues beforehand. On the day, if you have trouble getting online, get in touch. We will try to help, but we cannot guarantee support and you should consider that if you cannot connect to a session that is running successfully, you will have lost your place. We can transfer you to a new session upon payment of a £10 Spotlight transfer fee.

Everything you need to complete your course and gain your certificate is included in the one fee above. However, check out these optional extras:

  • Additional time course extensions available if you need to go beyond 60 days
  • Global English printed and embossed certificate posted to you (£15 UK / £20 outside)
  • Resources from the course available as a FREE downloadable PDF from your student area
  • Discount on further Spotlight Live TESOL sessions or Global English online programmes

This five-hour short course on getting to grips with Zoom Basics for English Teaching contains approximately four hours of online material with video and a one hour Zoom seminar, where you participate with a small group.

Student Comments

This is a brand news course in our TESOL Spotlight Series. Recent comments from our first training sessions include:

Thank you for your kind comments at the conclusion of the Zoom Basics course! It was fun, clear and very practical to go through the theory and practice for Zoom. It has removed all fears of using it.
Anne-May, France

The modules were great as was the live session. I’ve learned lots about Zoom and picked up various tips which I can apply in my teaching. In particular I now feel confident to use whiteboard and annotation by me/students in my class for the first time.
Thanks! Good to be challenged and inspired.
Davide Andrew, UK
