English Grammar in Use (Murphy) is a recommended TEFL/TESOL title from the Global English reading list, available to buy on Amazon.
What it is. Raymond Murphy's self-study grammar reference and practice book for intermediate learners, published by Cambridge University Press. It is the middle title of three: Essential Grammar in Use covers elementary, English Grammar in Use intermediate, and Advanced Grammar in Use the level above that.
How it is built. Every unit is a two-page spread - the explanation and examples on the left, exercises on the right. Units are grouped by area: tenses, modals, the passive, conditionals, reported speech, articles and nouns, relative clauses, prepositions, phrasal verbs. That grouping means you can look one thing up rather than work through the book in order. Additional exercises and study guides sit at the end. Two things vary between printings and both matter to a buyer: whether the answer key is included, and how the extra practice is supplied. Read the listing for both before you order.
Who it suits. Trainees who use English confidently but were never formally taught its grammar, and who need to be able to answer "why is it have been and not am being?" on the spot. It is also a book your future students may well own themselves, so knowing its layout is useful in itself.
What it does not do. It is written for learners, not for teachers. It states the rule and drills it; it does not tell you how to present that language, how to practise it or how to correct it in a lesson. Pair it with a methodology title and with the grammar modules on your course, which are written from the teaching side.
