Teaching English is a way of sharing your language with the world and enjoying the culture of others.
There are many different ways of using your Global English qualification around the world here are just a few:
1. TESOL/TEFL teacher
Typically youll be working for a private language school in a non-English speaking country and youll have a 10 month to 1 year contract. Schools may be small or part of a larger organisation, and your students will be a mixture of younger learners and adults. Youll probably be teaching from 22 25 hours a week and the hours will be spread out across the day, depending on the school timetable. For this type of work youll need a Global English Level 2 TESOL or Global English Level 2 TESOL with business qualification.
2. English Conversation teacher
A really good way of starting your career teaching English conversation is extremely popular in many developing countries. The focus here is perhaps a little lesson on grammar and more on communication, and there may be some socialising to do as well! You may be working alongside a more experienced teacher or someone qualified to give the students the grammar input they need. Students can be adults or younger learners and again your hours may be flexible you may have a contract but it will depend on the country and the school. Ideal as a way in to the profession, the Global English Level 1 TESOL will get you started and on your way.
3. Freelance Private tutor
Ultimate ideal for teacher will work a flexible number of hours and possibly for more than one school. Youll probably develop a list of private students as well and may need to create courses for them yourself. But be prepared to travel most likely youll need transport to get you around the various locations (some in-company teaching may be a part of your portfolio) and there probably wont be a contact. The advantages of freedom, working for yourself and flexibility, working when you want, often outweigh the disadvantage of lack of a secure contract. Recommended courses: Global English Level 2 TESOL or Global English Level 2 TESOL with business.
4. ESP and Business teacher
English for Special Purposes means teaching English to people who are learning the language for a specific reason. They may be company employees in a particular industry or environment (such as aviation or the military). But most often ESP students are involved in industry or commerce so our Global English Level 2 TESOL with business will be the best course to choose. There is a greater degree of teacher input with Business/ESP teaching, as youll be working with small groups or one-to-one, sometimes on the company premises. Youll find these positions available more often in the developed countries where they can afford the expertise a Business English teacher brings. Youll need a professional approach but will be better rewarded, and if you have any business experience to draw on this will help as well.
5. Volunteer teacher - to read some student experiences - click here>>
There is a real need for the English language in less fortunate countries around the world. If you wish to volunteer a small part of your life to help the underprivileged, in exchange for room and board, then a range of wonderful experiences await you. Global English works with Global Volunteer Network to send teachers to different projects around the world. To get you started, we suggest taking a Global English Level 1 TESOL.
6. Summer Camp teacher
If you are interested in teaching English to youngsters, then there are several opportunities in summer schools both in English speaking countries and overseas. These schools fit in with summer holidays and contracts are usually short term. There will be a blend of conversation and socialising expect to be busy with teaching in the mornings and activities in the afternoons! Global English Level 2 TESOL and some teaching practice are likely to be important here to get you started.
7. Working from home
With the Internet explosion, there are growing opportunities for staying exactly where you are and teaching via the phone and Internet. Those studying English in this way tend to be business people who cant make time to attend traditional classes yet want a bespoke experience. This form of teaching has taken off in France in particular and one of our graduates is also teaching like this in India. Its popularity is bound to increase as technology expands to meet demand. In the U.K. there are also various agencies offering English in a teachers home. Teaching is conducted by the host teacher in the mornings but students are looking for the total English experience, so if you are in the UK, with a decent house and would like to share you life with a student from overseas for a week or 2, this could be an attractive option. In addition to a nice home, the Global English Level 2 TESOL or Global English Level 2 TESOL with business is recommended.
There are also several different career paths for people who stay in the profession, from becoming an Assistant Director of Studies to setting up your own language school. It all depends on what you want to do.
But you can get started from here.
