TEFL AFRICA/TESOL AFRICA
Regional Overview - teaching English in Africa
The attitude towards English Language Teaching in Africa in generally quite good, with notable exceptions. However, as the worlds poorest 20 countries are in Africa, you will usually find that there is much less money to spend on teaching and resources than in other parts of the world. Consequently you will find fewer paid opportunities here than in other regions, such as Asia or Latin America. But Africa has so much to offer the adventurous EFL teacher. It is a land of tremendous contrast, from the Arab nations of the Mediterranean (where EFL prospects are generally better) to the lesser travelled regions of Central Africa. It is a land of contrasts, generally undeveloped in EFL terms, where opportunities for enriching experiences abound, even if your classroom is ill equipped.
Some countries in Sub-Saharan Africa actually have English as their main language of instruction. Therefore there may be fewer positions in these countries, including (Nigeria, Malawi, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe) although some native teachers are sought, particularly in the secondary sector. While the desire to hire native speakers is present in many other African nations, the finances are not and as a result the only work available is through the voluntary organisations, such as VSO.
