TITLE : the NEW edition HEADWAY Students Book
AUTHORS : Liz and John Soars; Mike Sayer
PUBLISHER : OXFORD Pub. 2003
LEVEL : INTERMEDIATE
TARGET : Teens to Adult
The New edition of Headway Intermediate is of the high standard we have come to expect from this series. They treat the students with respect. It is reassuring that the Headway books are continually being revised and up dated to give us the best product possible.
I like this book because it combines helping students to enjoy learning English, with the ability to think from a teachers perspective. It is easy to use both by experienced and fledgling teachers.
The texts are clear and use up to date material, real winners of the Lottery,(page 66),and references to Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings (page 28) pictures like the London Eye and information about living personalities, the Swedish cellist, Astrid Johnson for example.
The contents page clearly shows the aims of each unit and gives references to all relevant material. Each Unit is presented in user-friendly sections covering the target area using all four skills READING; WRITING; LISTENING and SPEAKING. There are back-up exercises in the Work Book, which can be bought with or without the key. The Teachers Book is easy to use and gives further material as well as on-line sources for information.
Grammar is covered well, both directly in Grammar Spot,(which is easy to see as it is colour coded in a blue square) in each Unit, and by using the target area in the texts and listening exercises. There are many practice exercises for using the structure being taught, which are designed to consolidate what has just been covered. The Stop and Check in the Teachers Book gives a photocopiable test after each three units and there are two Progress Tests also included.
The lay out of the pages is colourful and attractive. The Students Book also contains the Tape Scripts which can be useful
Any student working conscientiously through Headway Intermediate Students Book will improve their knowledge of English and gain confidence in using it in real situations.
