About Thailand
Whether it is the sun-kissed beaches and tropical islands, friendly people, delicious food, or just an adventure a world away from here, Thailand offers all this to you in abundance. It is a country of geographical diversity and one of the most popular destinations for our Global English gap year students. But it is also an excellent first stop for the more adventurous novice teacher looking for teaching practice before they begin their career. So if you are interesting in working in Thailand, read on...
About Phuket
Our partner TEFL school is located on the island of Phuket in Patong Beach. Here you’ll find rainforests teeming with wildlife, edged by breathtakingly white sandy beaches. With over 3 million visitors annually it is Thailand's largest island. Located in the Andaman Sea off Thailand's west coast, Phuket, or the 'Pearl of the South' as it has become known, is connected to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge. It also has its own airport, around an hour's flight from Bangkok. As a location it is incredibly diverse, with rocky and sandy beaches, tall cliffs, forests, waterfalls and temples. And there is plenty to do on the island, whatever your budget.
A little about teaching in Thailand
Teaching work is plentiful, the students are relaxed and friendly and the English language is in great demand as tourism and international business booms. However, very few schools advertise outside of the country, primarily for reasons of cost. Generally teaching position will have to be arranged from within Thailand. So getting your Teaching Practice in Thailand here will really help you in your search for work. If you have ever visited the main cities you will probably have met many English speakers passing through. Indeed you will find that many of your colleagues may be travellers who are simply looking to finance their voyage through the country, rather than career teachers.
Accommodation is not usually offered with many positions, but it is generally very cheap. Indeed the cost of living in Thailand is very low and it is generally easy to exist quite comfortably on part time hours, but full teaching positions are available as demand regularly is greater than supply, so with a GE course and your teaching practice, you will stand a better chance of finding work successfully.
Prospects are also good for the self-employed freelancer but only when you have been in one place for a while and have established yourself. You will need to get a teaching license, but our partner TEFL school can help you with this and provide you with all the relevant information. Career assistance includes advice on current positions available in Thailand, where to look for them, how to prepare a CV, and how to apply. A word of caution - a degree is required to obtain a Ministry of Education Teacher Licence in Phuket Province and Bangkok.
But don't just plan to teach - there is so much more to do! With our partner TEFL school only two minutes walk from the beach, you can relax, enjoy the nightlife, or use Patong Beach as a base for more adventure. Why not try your hand at diving off the superb coral reefs, hiking in the hills and mountains of the north, river and sea kayaking, or jungle rafting?
So what could be better than completing your TEFL/TESOL training in Thailand?
